Inspired by geological maps, Emily is drawn in by the details to be found on the map’s surface. Her large circle prints are inspired by the geological maps of specific places. Areas of different rock types are simplified into geometric shapes, then printed in the appropriate colour from the maps key. Overlapping translucent inks create new and unpredictable colours. Recent experiments into creating concrete ‘rocks’ respond to the idea of the Anthropocene – a new geological epoch marked by the impact that humans have had on the planet.
