Papermetal

Julie Bailey is a Yorkshire-based studio jeweller working under the name Papermetal. Her contemporary jewellery is shaped by a close relationship with materials, process and surface, influenced by her background in printmaking and guided by values of simplicity, restraint and attentiveness. Her work features softened geometric forms in silver, often embossed with delicate hand-cut paper petals that create subtle, tactile textures. These pale, silver-rich surfaces are sometimes contrasted with darker mixed metals such as brass, bronze and copper, creating quietly minimal pieces.

Julie’s Intaglio collection developed during a period working in France, where she ran a jewellery and printmaking gallery and workshop. Inspired by small moments in the studio, such as fallen petals scattered across the floor, the work reflects an appreciation of transience and imperfection rooted in wabi-sabi. Julie trained in jewellery earlier in her career, including specialist platinum work, and was twice highly commended in the National Platinum Awards. Her work has been exhibited in the UK and internationally, and she is a selected maker in the Crafts Council Directory. She now works from her garden studio in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, creating contemporary jewellery for selected galleries and undertaking bespoke commissions.
